Monthly
Statement:
December 2005
There was a notable decrease in the amount of sound I was
able to record this month. There were three main reasons for
this. First, the week before the show I spent a lot of time
trying to figure out how to present the sound instead of recording.
Second, the last week of the month I traveled to California,
which is not known for its public transportation. Last, but
certainly not least, the MTA workers' strike.
The strike turned out to be pretty interesting sound-wise.
Although I didn't record much that week (only a few minutes),
the sounds I got are unlike any other that I had recorded
previously. I guess I'm very lucky to have had the opportunity
to capture a strike that happens once in 25 years. The recorded
material is small in quantity but great in quality, like the
chanting of "Bloomberg is the racist thug" that
will most likely find its way into the sep-06 show.
The video attached was filmed at the rally that took place
at the Manhattan side of the Brooklyn Bridge on the last day
of the strike.
Process:
I'm accumulating sounds from public transportation systems
in New York City (6 months) and Lima-Peru (6 months) with
a minidisc digital recorder.
