Monthly Statement:
May 2006

This month I recorded the Staten Island Ferry. It was so exciting to record something so different! Although signs (mis)informed us that the Staten Island Ferry is currently celebrating it's 100th Anniversary, the truth is that it's been under the City's control for a hundred years but the first ferry actually started working as early as 1817.

Today, there are four different kinds of ferries, which can transport from 1,280 to 6,000 passengers. The ride from Lower Manhattan to Staten Island takes a little under 25 minutes. I took a train with at least 2,000 people on it and recorded bits on my way to Staten Island, and the complete trip back to Manhattan (from start to finish).

Overall, I think the ferry recordings weren't very successful. Although I did record some conversations (in at least three languages), as well as the announcements of departure and arrival, most of what I captured is the sound of the wind against the mic. Lots, lots of it.

What will I record next month? Hmm...

Process:
I'm accumulating sounds from public transportation systems in New York City (6 months) and Lima-Peru (6 months) with a minidisc digital recorder.

Accumulate: Sounds of public transit

Accumulator: Sergio Milla
