Monthly
Statement:
March 2006
All right. Each day I'm less and less motivated to record.
It's getting warmer, too, and I know very soon I'm going to
resume riding my bike to work. My subway rides will drop significantly.
Actually, my recording has already dropped: this month I recorded
only 30 minutes and 34 seconds.
Among this 30 minutes there's lots of the same, but there
is this 10 seconds that made going thru all that sound totally
worth it. This big, no neck, Joe Pesci-in-Goodfellas type
was talking to another of his kind very loudly for everyone
in that car to listen to his nonsense. I'm sorry, I kind of
don't like doing this, but I have to make fun of
this guy. What a creep. Listen, especially the first 10 seconds,
and you'll understand.
But the truth is I'm not very interested in what I record
anymore. I find myself with the mic hooked up in the front
pocket of my bag, and the minidisc distractedly on my lap
or in a pocket, while through my headphones I'm listen to
something else entirely.
My project has to shift direction. I have some ideas that
will show up here in the next months. One thing is clear:
the project should be more about quality than quantity.
Process:
I'm accumulating sounds from public transportation systems
in New York City (6 months) and Lima-Peru (6 months) with
a minidisc digital recorder.
