Monthly
Statement:
February 2006
It went up. This month I recorded a total of 3 hours, 45 minutes
and 34 seconds of subway sounds. Uploading the sound to my
computer, categorizing it, and then going through it was a
long, painful process. It somehow made me understand that,
as my first instincts had told me, this project wasn't about
quantity, but quality. There is probably no point in accumulating
hours and hours of sound. When I go through it, I keep hearing
the same plain, boring, and sometimes almost inaudible conversations
over and over again, the same mechanical sounds, and of course
the same prerecorded voices through the speakers. For some
reason, I even keep running into the same musicians! Sometimes,
though, I find a foreign musician with an exotic instrument,
and when it happens it really makes my day.
Something needs to happen with this project.
Process:
I'm accumulating sounds from public transportation systems
in New York City (6 months) and Lima-Peru (6 months) with
a minidisc digital recorder.
