May 2006
May brought a nice rebound in the number of mattresses gathered
in recent months. I think between spring cleaning and the
fact that I live near a college campus and it's the end of
a school year both help with a tide of mattresses getting
thrown out, though I almost thought I'd find more than the
sixteen I did get. I'm a hopeful hunter and ever the optimist.
With reports of a slowing economy, I surmise people may be
rethinking possible new mattress purchases in conjunction
with the latte factor. Or maybe they've decided to keep buying
their lattes and subsequently have to keep their old, less-than-comfortable
mattress. But I do think the freakonomics of my research has
found some connection between coffee and sleeping.
Running total: 135 mattresses
Process:
I will photograph discarded dreams in the guise of used mattresses
found in the trash during my daily travels about the city.
