Monthly Statement:
October 2005
This month I accumulated a lot of posters from the street, but had little time to make art due to all the shows and events that I was in or involved with. I am the art editor for Animal magazine which just put out it's sixth issue called "Instincts". That was a lot of work and we had a tremendous release party at BLVD in the Lower East Side of Manhattan. We gave out about 1000 copies of the magazine and made page 6 in the Post for the event. probably 2000 people showed up...it was a real mob scene. http://www.animalnewyork.com

I also curated a show which I was also in at the Red Hook (Brooklyn) art gallery, Diesel. The title of the show was "What Color Is Your Daddy's Caddy?" for which I made the piece "George Bush Doesn't Care about Black People" after the Kanye West Katrina telethon imbroglio. I used all posters from Newport cigarette ads, which are not normally posted on construction sites or other normal spots. These are mostly only on either the inside or outside of corner smoke shops or bodegas. It took me years to accumulate those posters specifically because of the tricky nature of their acquisition and scarcity. I was happy with my piece and the show in general.

I collected many Dennis Rodman "Pimps and Hoes" halloween posters this month. they were mostly down in the Chelsea section of NYC. I'm looking forward to combining them with the Tu-Pac posters of last month and getting that work together very shortly. http://www.chamuconegro.com

My fiancee Makeda, who is an avant garde actress, went with the Richard Maxwell company to Venice, Zurich and Melbourne this past month and brought me back some posters from her travels as well. I always like posters from other countries because they usually have such different color palates than the United States. Can't beat NYC for posters though, so until next month.........

Process: I will gather advertising posters from public spaces (as many of a specific kind as possible) and create collages from them.

Accumulate: Advertising posters
